DHS Rowers Win Bronze @ SA School Champs!
The DHS Rowing team had a very busy and rewarding experience at the South African School Champs at Rooderplaat Dam this past weekend.
Most of the races took place on Saturday, with the Junior Mens/Boys U16 Double Scull (JM/BU16 2x) taking place in the morning.
Londa Zungu and Awande Ndlovu placed 6th and Rowan van Rooyen and Luyanda Koboka placed 7th in their respective heats.
The U19s were very pleased to come away with medals for their third place. They were entered in the clubs event representing our partnership with Durban Rowing Club. The quad consisted of Durban Rowing Club juniors (boys younger than 19) from both Durban High School and Glenwood High School.
Their boat was manned by Danken Ellis (DHS), Caillin Mathys (DHS), Tholinhlanhla ‘Tallinch’ Ndwandwe (DHS), Grant Kennard (Glenwood) and was coaxed by Liam Gordon (DHS). Well done on your Bronze, Gentlemen!
On the Sunday our U16 quad had a very tough heat; they were up against some very experienced crews and the boys missed out on the final for their JM/BU16 4x+ schools event.
Rowing is a very team orientated sport, even in a scull (1 rower with two oars) or a double (2 rowers each having two oars).
Team members help each other carry boats and oars to the water, they help each other onto the water by making sure all is steady as the crew boats, and it is the team that supports and motivates each other to achieve, and to improve upon those achievements.
Well done, Gentlemen!
