Concussion

A sport such as rugby has a particularly high incidence of concussion, and school boy rugby players typically have several of these injuries over their rugby playing careers.  The Discovery SharkSmart Concussion Clinic based at the Sharks Academy Medical Centre aims to standardise the diagnosis and management of concussive episodes suffered by all sportsmen and women.  It also  provides a multi-disciplinary service where clinical assessments and return-to-play guidelines are provided.
For more information or to make an appointment, contact the Clinic on 031-3121136

Rugby Medic Training

Rugby Medic Training provides medics with the appropriate knowledge to render on-field medical support to injured players. It aims to ensure that all medics are trained to a satisfactory standard to perform rugby medic duties, and that injured players are treated correctly and professionally both on and off the field. This also means ensuring that players are appropriately managed and where necessary adequately transported to the nearest, most appropriate medical facility where they can receive further medical care if necessary.
Pupils, coaches, referees and parents of rugby players can benefit from this training programme. If you are interested in participating in this training, please complete a Rugby Medic Training Request Form.

Boksmart Spineline

BokSmart provides a toll-free National emergency telephone helpline called the ‘BokSmart Spineline’ to expedite and fast track the emergency treatment and management of a potentially seriously injured rugby player. The BokSmart Spineline is a dedicated emergency rugby helpline for serious concussion, head, neck and spine injuries. The aim of the BokSmart Spineline is to provide a potentially serious and/or catastrophically injured rugby player with the best possible emergency medical care related to his injury. This implies providing proper telephonic screening and advice, appropriate head, neck and spine stabilisation, and expedited transportation to the most suitable medical facility. It is also to ensure that the injured player gets the most effective treatment in the shortest possible time following injury.
