Happy Women’s Day!

South African women can be summed up in one sentence: “You strike a woman, you strike a rock.”

63 years ago those words made an impact on society when, back in 1956, 20 000 South African women of all races, creeds and cultures marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the Pass Laws.

The handed over a petition with 14 000 signatures and stood in silence for half an hour before singing a protest song – Wathint’ Abafazi Wathint’ imbokodo! Translation: Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.

More than half a century later we continue to honour these brave women, and countless others who have made an impact on our country, by celebrating Women’s Day.

We, the men of Durban High School, young and older, pay homage to the incredible women in our lives … we celebrate your strength, your will to succeed, your courage, your love, your patience, your compassion, your loyalty, your grace … may all your dreams be realised.

Happy Women’s Day 🌹

“I stand for simple justice, equal opportunity and human rights. The indispensable elements in a democratic society – and well worth fighting for.”
