The Latest from the Head Master’s Desk : 22 January 2016

We had a great start to the year.   Last Friday we had our Grade 8 Camp Out and even though it rained the boys where all in high spirits and enjoying themselves on the fields.  It looks like a nice group of boys and I have a lot of confidence in them taking us forward.  I have had compliments from members of the public and parents who have commented on how good the school looks at the moment as well as the appearance and manners of our boys.   One parent told me that she and her husband walked around the block and every single boy in uniform greeted them.
We are busy with the various Grade Information Evenings and we have had a good turnout at each of them.   It is good to see the level of involvement from the parents.  Hopefully it will last the whole year.   The best advice my father gave me was never spoken.  It was what he did as a father that taught me the biggest lessons.  That is what I want you as parents to do.
We opened a time capsule that dates back to 1968 this week.  We are going to put various items of interest into the new time capsule to be opened in 50 years from now.  This will take place at the 150th Assembly on Friday 29 January 2016.  In the old capsule, we found newspapers, brochures, coins and a plaque from 1968.  We will display these items in our new archive museum shortly.
It was good to see all our Cricket teams win against Krugersdorp this week.  We are starting with our traditional fixtures this weekend against Michaelhouse with some of the teams travelling but our 1st XI will be at home.  All the Water Polo is away.  I want to wish all the teams well for this term.
In assembly this week, I presented a 150th DHS tie to our longest serving member of staff, Mr Tony Human.  Mr Human is a legend at DHS and he has been on the teaching staff for more than 50 years.  This must be a record at any school.
I want to appeal to all the parents and Old Boys to support the various functions and festivals this year.  It is a bumper year and there is something for everyone to enjoy.
