It has been a very busy time for us this last two weeks. Because of our 150th Celebrations, we have been in the newspapers a number of times. The 150th assembly last week was a very special occasion. Like many others who attended, I felt very emotional throughout the programme. The speakers were all sincere and they all spoke from the heart. It was however the address by Mr Bennison and then Head Boy Mvumeleni Mathenjwa that I enjoyed the most. Afterwards the boys gave a war cry that reverberated throughout the Berea. Spine chilling stuff!
I am extremely proud of our 1st Water Polo side that made it to the final of the Grey College Water Polo Tournament. A number of these boys have been playing 1st team since grade 9 and they have been doing extremely well. The u/14A and u/15A Cricket teams both won their matches against Glenwood last weekend and the first team had their opponents in a lot of trouble early on but could not finish them off. The 1st Basketball team continue to sweep aside all opposition. They are a delight to watch.
We have our Junior Speech Day on Friday 5 February where we recognise the boys who excelled academically last year. They have worked hard and deserve the accolades that come their way. Very often you only hear about the sporting achievements and it is as important if not more important than any other achievements.
I will be travelling to Johannesburg next Friday to attend a Breakfast arranged by the Gauteng branch of the Old Boys and then on Friday 4 March we have our DHS 150th Corporate Breakfast here in Durban. I am looking forward to seeing as many Old Boys as possible.
As I am writing this I can hear two of my bands practicing. The Marching Band is on the fields and the Jazz band in the quad. I have always said a good school is a busy school and together with the bands I can also hear and see the Cricketers and Water Polo players practicing. There are even some squads preparing for the winter season on the fields.
We have another busy weekend ahead of us with Cricket, Water Polo and Basketball against Clifton. I want to invite Old Boys to come and support the boys on Saturday. The times for the fixtures are in this publication.
