Inaugural DHS U18 Rugby Sevens Tournament

The inaugural DHS U18 Sevens tournament took place over the weekend of 9/10 September, with DHS inviting 16 teams from across the country to participate in a highly competitive tournament.
The favourites going into the tournament were the DHS U18A side who have won an impressive 4 from 6 tournaments this year, firmly securing their tag as KZN’s No 1 side prior to the tournament.
However, Sevens Rugby often throws out surprises and the DHS tournament proved to be the case as it saw the rise of the DHS U18B team, nicknamed the “Baby Blitz”, who wowed spectators on the day with their great showing of team commitment and enthusiasm. This side was able to brush aside some big names on their route to the final overcoming the likes of Westville U18A, Port Natal and Hilton in the group stages. They then triumphed over St Charles which set up a dramatic Semi-Final clash against Kearsney.
The DHS U18A side cruised into the quarter finals after convincing wins over Benoni High, South Coast Invitation and Westville U18B. They then faced a determined College team who ultimately were no match for the horseflies on the day. This set up a exciting semi against the young guns from Glenwood, who played with a lot of heart and managed to upset the favourites with a grinding 12-5 victory.
This set-up a Final between two unlikely contenders, Glenwood and the DHS U18B side, who, in a riveting fixture, overcame Kearsney in a tense affair. The Final was well contested but ultimately Glenwood had too much firepower for the DHS U18B, winning the game 26-12 and lifting the Cup Trophy.
It was a successful tournament enjoyed by all and we look forward to another rendition of it again in 2017!
