As part of this conference, ambassadors, business experts and educators from all around the world were in attendance and as part of the event, there was an announcement of the winning candidates of the Ithala Schools Enterprise Challenge 2016.
The Schools Enterprise Challenge, sponsored by Ithala Bank, The Saville Foundation and Teach a Man to Fish, saw Durban High School Learner, Samkelo Ntetha and Durban High School as an entity, receive the Runner Up Award for Best Business Idea for recognition of the exceptional school enterprise planned at the school and its contribution to developing business and practical skills amongst young people in South Africa.
The DHS learners along with Samkelo and under the supervision of Ms Sprunt, will be implementing a sustainable fruit and vegetable garden that is aimed at supplying the school’s tuck shop with healthy produce to be incorporated amongst the other items already being sold to the learners. The items are aimed at being used for healthier food options such as smoothies, salads and more. The profits made will be used to grow the School Based Enterprise and to help with community outreach programmes. The enterprise is an opportunity for boys at DHS to gain experience in all different areas of running a sustainable business.
DHS aim to implement their idea from the start of 2017 and the cash prize of R3000, won by Samkelo, will be used as start-up capital for their new business.
Well done to Samkelo and Ms Sprunt!
