On Monday, 9 January 2017, Durban High School welcomed around 200 pupils to Grade 8 for their first day of orientation, as little fish in the big High School pond.
Although the school year officially starts on Wednesday, it is tradition for DHS to invite the Grade 8 learners to become familiar with learning what it means to be a part of the brotherhood of DHS.

All learners and their parents were welcomed by the prefect body at the school gates, with parents being invited to stay for tea and scones. The boys were officially welcomed by the Heads of Grade 8 as well as head prefect, Phendulani Buthelezi who encouraged the learners to get involved and make the most of their time at DHS, striving to be the best that they can.
The learners were then divided into groups and taken on a tour of the school. Then it was on to a number of sporting trials and tests.
With nervousness and excitement being the general feeling among all the “newbies”, they seemed to feel ‘a part’ of DHS once they had met the prefects, become a bit more comfortable with the school premises and discovered some of what it is to be a learner at Durban’s oldest school.
Welcome Grade 8s, the future Class of 2021! We wish you a memorable 5 years at Durban High School!
