Trevor Bennison Rugby Day
DHS took on Port Natal in the main game of the “Trevor Bennison” Rugby Day on the Wednesday 22 March. In its second year, the Rugby Day was a success for those teams still finding their best combinations for the season ahead. In a shortened format of the game it was a good run out for the teams.
DHS ran out comfortable 37-3 winners over their Durban counterparts, however, it was an unconvincing performance from the “Horseflies” who made too many handling errors on the day. Although the game had glimpses of excellence it was a forgettable performance by the blue and gold who are still trying to recover from a very inconsistent start to the season.
Standout performers were the two Grant Khomo players from last year, lock Celimpilo Gumede and inside centre Lwandile Menze. Both contributed with dynamic running that resulted in some positive momentum for the team. Tries were recorded intermittently throughout, with a special mention for wing Nkita Mhloma who crossed over for his first try at this level.
On a positive note, the DHS defence continues to stand resolute and they will take much confidence as they head to Saints in a few weeks’ time.
There is still a lot of work to be done and the team is still finding its form but, with the continued effort they put in at practice, it seems they are not far away from finding the form that saw them dominate Northwood a few weeks back.
