Latest from the Head Master’s Desk : 30 June 2017

The second term of 2017 has certainly been an eventful one, and personally very rewarding. It has been very gratifying to receive the support of the boys, parents, staff and passionate Old Boys of School. While there is much to do, there is no shortage of willingness from all parties.
Obviously, a stand out feature of the term has been the success of the 1st Rugby XV. We all gained immense pride, not only from their results, but more importantly from their style of play and dignified conduct throughout. I commend Mr Scott Mathie and his coaching staff of all teams for their commitment. A big thank you to coaches and staff of all activities. Special mention must also be made of our Chess Team which is unbeaten in KZN, as well as our 1st Badminton Team.
A favourite highlight of mine is the lunchtime music concerts on Thursdays, held in the Chris Seabrooke Music Centre. It is wonderful listening to the amazing talent of boys in a venue that encourages their pursuits. Well done to Ms Rungan in showcasing the talent of these boys.
On a more sombre note, we hosted the Memorial Service of Old Boy, Lorenzo Rodrigues who heroically gave his life in saving the lives of others in his unit of the French Legion. Lorenzo was passionate about DHS and embodied all the values of the school and ultimately the value of Courage. The world needs more heroes as role models.
We also say farewell to two staff members who will be moving abroad to teach. Mr Sooriah, in the Dramatic Arts Department and Mr Maharaj, from the Life Sciences Department, will both leave to teach in Asia and we wish them all the best in the next stage of their lives. They will be missed by the DHS family. We do however welcome new staff to DHS next term and wish Mr Gavin Goodwin, Mr Steve La Marque and Ms Leigh Meyer all the best in the years ahead. I know that DHS will get into your hearts and that you will enjoy your time at this great school.
There are many exciting initiatives that will be rolled out and it certainly is an exciting time to be on the Blue Train. I encourage all members of the DHS family to get involved in some way or another. It is our duty.
Good luck to all boys and staff participating in activities during the holidays.
Finally, thank you to ALL staff for their efforts throughout the term and support given to me.  Enjoy the holidays.
Deo Fretus!
