The School’s Matric dance was a formal occasion at which the class of 2018 gathered as a group to celebrate together their most important year before writing the biggest exam of their schooling career.
On Saturday 28 July, 158 Matriculants converged outside the ICC to celebrate in style the unique bond that they share – brothers of DHS.
A red carpet leading from Walnut Road into the patio area, welcomed the young men and their partners who were treated like celebrities. Professional photographers were on hand to capture their magnificent arrival; whilst our hosts for the evening, Mr & Mrs Pinheiro, greeted every guest with a warm handshake and smile.
Icy drinks quickly quenched the parched throats and an electric buzz permeated the foyer. Much anticipation filled the air as they waited eagerly for the doors to the hall to open. Mr & Mrs Pinheiro led the procession on the red carpet to the catchy song C’est La Vie by Khaled.
Everyone was dazzled by the Paris theme: C’est La Vie – this is life. Each table was draped in either black or gold damask tablecloths, with gold under plates, silver crockery and black napkins. In keeping with the theme, every outer table had as the centre piece a gold Eiffel Tower, draped in gold fairy lights and the inner tables boasted a glass dome covering a miniature Parisian bicycle, a Chanel perfume bottle, an Eiffel Tower, a lamppost and black pearls. The interchanging lighting brought added colour to the table. This was placed on a glass base with the words C’est La Vie printed on the sides. Every boys’ napkin ring was a specially made gold Eiffel Tower which doubled as a holder for their designer Class of 2018 sterling silver rings. Each young lady received a handmade pearl bracelet with an Eiffel Tower silver charm.
The edge of the dance floor had a strategically placed, well lit black and gold 3D Paris sign. The evening commenced with Mr Pinheiro welcoming everyone and wishing all the guests a wonderful evening.
Jonathan Evans did a sterling job as the Master of Ceremonies and Zac Adam made everyone feel really nostalgic as he took us through the Class of 2018’s journey together as one group. Some “paper plate” awards were then presented. Only the learners themselves know the reason for such awards. The Connor McGregor award was awarded to Bandile Khuzwayo, Cirilo Sebastio received the Best Foreign Import Award, the Best Haircut award went to Krishna Rajput, whilst the Best Smile and Most Memorable award went to Sbonelo Mbambo. Yoreshan Pillay received the Best Eyebrows award, Asanda Mnguni received the Most Oddly Shaped Head award, the “AJ Human” award was received by Moletshe Lwazi, with Monde Mqadi receiving the Salesman of the Year award. The Most Likely to Complain award went to Cameron Naidoo and, last but not least, Brytson Boekhoud received the Picture of the Year award.
Blose Melokhule and his partner thrilled the guests with their ballroom dance moves. What a surprise! Very few knew that Blose could actually dance!
After Ethan Mack proposed the toast and all key figures were thanked and gifts handed out, everyone indulged in the scrumptious buffet which was followed by mounds of ice cream with a range of toppings, as well as melt in your mouth chocolate brownies topped with chantilly cream.
The Goo Goo Dolls by Iris saw Zac, Ethan and Celimpilo and their partners performing the opening dance. They were soon joined on the dance floor by all the other couples. The celebrations and dancing continued until the last song played at midnight with the entire Matric body together on the dance floor. Hundreds of photographs was taken throughout the evening.
One thing that was evident throughout the evening was the strong sense of unity and brotherhood in this group. Each person celebrated their last time as a group with much laughter and enjoyment. I am sure that many if not all realised that this night marked the end of a schooling career with this particular group of friends.
