Every Tuesday our Community Service Elective boys go down the road to the Bright Eyes Centre for Visually Impaired Children to spend time with the boys and girls who go to preschool there.
This week the trip to Bright Eyes was extra special as we had a surprise in store … we handed over to them a cheque of R5000 that our School had raised from donations from the boys and staff as one of the our projects for Mandela Month.
Carron Strachan, Director of Bright Eyes (visually impaired herself), and Cathryn Aylett, Head Teacher, were delighted to receive the cheque and extremely grateful. As were staff members Christy-Ann Potgieter and Gloria Maqwelane.
Miss Joshua and our DHS boys spent an hour with the kids, singing with them, playing games with them and, most importantly, putting smiles on their faces. The children showed so much love and affection towards us.
Our boys were separated into different areas, some to spend time with different kids and some going to different rooms to help with the preparation of the projects for their lessons that day.
It was amazing to see how showing a child just a little attention makes their day … it brought joy to the faces of the small Bright Eyes children and put smiles on the faces of our boys who are making such an effort to entertain these delightful children.
We are proud of the money our boys raised and the work our Community Service does at the Centre.
We are living up to our “Gentlemen Code” and becoming “Men of Character”.
