Two DHS Boys, Taine Owen and Godswill Mbonambi, made history as the first teenagers of school-going age to be appointed as Team Leaders in the 2018 Urban Ignition Youth Festival. Both Boys are also DPHS Old Boys.
Urban Ignition is a four-day event wherein teams of teenagers and young adults from Durban and all over SA undertake structured community service projects in and around Durban.
“The leadership foundations we learnt at DPHS and the leadership culture at Durban High School played a huge role in us being appointed as the youngest Team Leaders in the event,” said Taine Owens.
“The Festival is a great opportunity for us to reconnect each year with our DPHS friends that went to other high-schools. Some of our friends have been doing this every year since Grade 7. As a Team Leader this year, I was humbled and impressed with the work ethic of our team members in serving the needs of people in our city,” said Godswill Mbonambi.
Godswill led a team at the Salvation Army in Morningside, whilst Taine led a team out at a Children’s Home outside of Ballito.  Both boys are in Grade 11 at DHS.
Urban Ignition has been held annually since 2009. It is the brain-child of another DPHS Old Boy, Mathew Nixon-James. The festival is held during the July Holidays.
