1st XI Match Report:
On Saturday 15 September the DHS 1st XI team played their first cricket fixture of the season, beating KZN Development by 429 runs, with Tinashe Nenhunzi setting a DHS record with a score of 203 not out.
It being my first official match as the head coach of the 1st team, I really wanted the season to kick off on a good note and pull off a win for DHS. The last time these two teams met, in a T20 match, KZN Development managed to beat us on the day.
At about 08h50 on Saturday the two captains walked out to the middle with the umpires to toss the coin. DHS won the toss and decided to bat first. Knowing that they beat us last season, we were really focused and well prepared for this match.
We had a good pre-season leading up to this day and the boys, including myself, could not wait to get the first game behind us. Our opening batsmen, Taine Owen and Martin Mugoni, got us off to a good start, scoring 38 runs off 6 overs. The message to the openers had been pretty simple – try and see off the new ball, look to rotate strike and aim to score at least 3 runs per over. We certainly scored greater than the 3 runs per over, which was a bonus. Martin got a jaffer of a ball which saw him back in the changing room in the 7th over. Next came Brayden Sambhu who only faced two balls before getting caught at cover. At this stage we were 40 for 2 in 8 overs.
We did not allow losing two wickets so early in our innings create any panic, knowing very well that we have a very deep batting line up. In came the man of the moment, Tinashe Nenhunzi, U19 Zimbabwean international cricketer. Tinashe proved why he is an international player, scoring 203 not out and in the process breaking the DHS record set by D Saunders in 1995 of 163 not out.
Another player that deserves to be mentioned is Rodney Mapfudza who scored 103 not out.
With no disrespect to our opposition, we played scintillating cricket on the day! We were ruthless and have set the bar/standard very high for the season.
