Grade 8 Bell Ringing Ceremony

Grade 8 Bell Ringing Ceremony

The Grade 8 Orientation week ended with a Camp Out from Friday to Sunday, 11 to 13 January
Day 1 of the Grade 8 Camp went well. Mr Lewis, Head of Outdoor Leadership Activities at School, said the Boys had a great night, putting up their tents (Top Field looked like Tent City) and braaing their own supper.
On the Saturday the Boys spent a wonderful day, filled with fun team activities – races in the pool, completing mind-bending puzzles and team building challenges and obstacles courses.
They had delicious burgers and chips for lunch (which raised a loud cheer), plus dessert, catered for by Peppers & Pans. They were in bed early that night, tired out by their busy day.
Mr Lewis said they are a delightful group of young men. So, Moms and Dads, you can be very proud of your sons … we certainly are!
On Sunday 13 January 2019, the Grade 8 boys concluded their week-long orientation by attending the traditional Bell Ringing Ceremony to which the parents were invited to attend.
The DC Thomson Hall was buzzing with enthusiasm from the newly inducted Grade 8 boys, parents, DHS staff, the prefect body, the RCL members and a handful group of Grade 11 mentors.
This 153 year old reputable school on the Berea always treats this occasion with dignity and pride. The boys were welcomed by the ringing of the bell, followed by the prefects shaking their hands and assisting them into wearing their blazers. This solidified the ethos of brotherhood between the juniors and the seniors.
Mr Pinheiro (Head Master) and Mr Goodwin (Deputy Head Master) then shook the hands of all two hundred new boys, ensuring them that they are indeed part of this school.
They then unanimously pledged their allegiance to the brotherhood of the school, and committed themselves to uphold the rich history and traditions of the school that their fellow brothers left for them as a legacy.
May their next five years be filled with the joy of having fulfilled all their desired high school goals in academics, sports, cultural and leadership potential.
Welcome to DHS, the future Class of 2023!
Deo Fretus!
