Durban High School hosted the KZN Schools Drumline Competition for the third time since its inception in 2017, on Wednesday 14 August 2019.
High Schools from around KwaZulu Natal were invited to participate in this exhilarating, fast paced event which was initiated by the Head of Music at DHS, Natalie Rungan. According to Miss Rungan, the inter-school event was designed to open up new avenues of participation in schools’ Drumline activities, providing learners with an opportunity to compete on a provincial level. The battle units consisted of five or more members who prepared three 1:30 – 2:00 minute performance routines.
The level of competition was extremely high this year, which made it particularly difficult for judges to decide on the overall winner. However, Durban High School’s Drumline came out on top as the 2019 Winner.
Many agreed that their “swagger” and exceptional coordination between skill and movement is what set them apart from the others. Their coach Bruce Baker, one of the most accomplished professional drummers in South Africa, has worked rigorously with the team to ensure that they were sufficiently prepared.
This annual event, which is free and open to the public, continues to grow each year. The date for next year has already been set for 12 August 2020.
