The Old Red Brick Building

DHS Old Boy and former Archivist Mr JJ Oddy, has written another book about Durban High School. Please see his write up below.

‘‘This book has no age restriction and is a must have for all those who did or do don the BLUE and GOLD.’’

It is 50 years since the demolition of the Old Red Brick Building of 1895 began in September 1971. This destruction at the time was a tremendous shock to thousands of Old Boys. It is time to help recreate the period before the alma mater of many was replaced with the School we have today. But always remember, the Old Original Building and the present day School are still DHS.

The wonder of the years that rolled out prior to 1971 are historic.

Material related to this early period, some glorious years, has been recalled, condensed and brought back to consciousness through research and the acquisition of a host of photographs. It has been an inspiring journey meeting Old Boys and coaxing some to recall their memories. These gentlemen, great characters, were once young lads who worked, played and contributed to the rich tapestry that is Our DHS.

Many Old Boys, Staff and others connected to School, have been transported back to the fore via memories. One can connect with these lads almost as though they are sitting in the desk next to you. (Depending on the folk you are associating with, while reading this book, would determine whether you would have been courting mischief to qualify to be in line for a good thrashing from the Head Master or the Prefects!)
