The Orientation Week for the 2023 intake of Grade 8s was held from 16 to 20 January 2023.
On Monday 16 January the new Grade 8 boys walked through the main gates as DHS learners for the first time in their high school career. Some were very excited to set foot at our School, and others were, understandably, a little anxious as they were not certain about being in a completely new environment. Some of the anxiety stemmed from the fact that they were the smallest group of boys among over a thousand boys at school.
The boys were split into three groups: blue, gold and red groups. The idea behind their grouping was for that each small group would enjoy the full experience of the workshops, sports, outdoor and admin activities. At the conclusion on the week, all groups had an equal opportunity of enjoying all DHS’s planned experiences.
The Prefect body had also given up one week of their holiday time, and came to assist the boys with the experience of being at DHS. Their involvement in the induction programme was beyond the call of duty and we thank them for their efforts.
The boys concluded their week-long induction programme by attending the Grade 8 Bell Ringing Ceremony on 20 February 2023. The DC Thomson Hall was buzzing with enthusiasm from the newly inducted Grade 8 boys, DHS staff, parents, the Prefect body, and the RCL members. This 157-year-old and reputable school on the Berea always treats this occasion with dignity and pride. The boys were welcomed by the ringing of the bell, and this was followed by handing over their blazers to the prefects, who then helped them in wearing it. This solidified the ethos of brotherhood between the juniors and the seniors. Mr Pinheiro (Head Master) shook the hands of all new boys, assuring them that they are indeed part of this great school.
May the next five years be filled with joy of having fulfilled all their desired high school goals in academics, sports, cultural and leadership potential.
